Driving Emissions Reduction in Australia’s Rural Sector

Australia's agriculture, fisheries, and forestry (AFF) sectors are working towards lowering emissions as part of Australia’s transition toward a net zero economy. The fifteen rural Research and Development Corporations (RDCs) are leading the charge by investing in research, development, extension, adoption and commercialisation (R&D and EA&C) to measure and reduce emissions for producers and throughout the value chain for the benefit of the AFF sectors and Australian society.

This report presents an analysis of emissions reduction (ER) investments made by RDCs over the past three years. With 320 projects worth a total of $384 million, RDCs have focused on reducing emissions in critical areas including methane (livestock) and nitrous oxide (fertilisers), as well as leveraging opportunities in energy efficiency, natural capital, and systems innovation. RDC investments are designed to both enhance productivity and profitability while creating measurable ER impacts at both the producer and industry scales, assisting Australia’s AFF sectors toward a sustainable, low-emissions future.
